Question #1  When I click the smiley it does not show up in my email!

If you are using the "click" method to add your images, you must first place your cursor and click on the space where you want to insert your image. Then click the image you want to insert. An easier way is to just drag the image from Smileycons right into your email (drag and drop).

Note: If you are going to send Smileycons to someone using Hotmail or Yahoo or other web based accounts (or if you are using Hotmail, Yahoo or a web based email account) you will have to be sure that Local Mode is unchecked.

Other things to consider:  Did you add some of your own images? Keep in mind that you must upload images you add to the internet (advanced users only), as the images must be called from the web when sending to Hotmail, Yahoo and other web-based mails. You can, however, add your own and send to those using Outlook, Outlook Express and other html capable mails without having to upload images.

--  Back to Top of Page  --

Question #2:  When I send to people using Hotmail or Yahoo, they cannot see my smileys (or when I send from Yahoo or Hotmail).

Open your smiley program and make sure it's configured correctly for the Web mail application you're using. For instructions see our Help/Program Options section. Also, you must configure your Web mail for HTML email. Most Web mail sites are set as plain text by default and almost all of them, including Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, and Gmail offer options for setting up your mail to send in HTML. Remember: You cannot send any kind of images in Plain Text email. So make sure you use the option for HTML mail. Some may not call it HTML, they may use the term "Rich Text" or "Graphics & Colors".

If you're using an Web Email site that is not listed in the Smileycons Configuration Tool, you will need to set Smileycons to "Universal Mode" and uncheck "LOCAL MODE" under "Options" on the Smileycons toolbar.

Note: Hotmail Users can control whether they see images when receiving mail, so if you send to a Hotmail recipient, and you are sure you do not have "local mode" checked, have the Hotmail user do this: Log in to Hotmail account. Go to the Options page. On the left side of the page, click Mail, and then click Mail Display Settings. In the Display Internet Images section, select "Display Images Automatically"

Other things to consider:  Did you add some of your own images? Keep in mind that you must upload images you add to the internet (advanced users only), as the images must be called from the web when sending to Hotmail, Yahoo and other web-based mails. You can, however, add your own and send to those using Outlook, Outlook Express and other HTML-capable mails without having to upload images.

Question #3:  I tried to use Smileycons on my forum, but they won't work.

Be sure you choose the correct forum using the configuration tool in Smileycons, then be sure you choose the correct Message Board type. You will see three types listed. If you do not know which kind to use on your particular forum or message board, ask the administrator on the forum to help you.  IMG is the most common so that will already be checked for you by default.

Other things to consider:  Did you add some of your own images? Keep in mind that you must upload images you add to the internet (advanced users only), as the images must be called from the web when using in many forums. You can, however, add your own and send to those using Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail and other html capable mails without having to upload images.

Question #4:  I installed one of the expansion packs, but I don't see them.

First, be sure you installed correctly: To install expansion packs, simply save the downloaded file to your desktop and double-click it to begin the automatic installation process. (If you purchased a CDROM, simply click where it says to install on the CDROM)

You can access the expansion Packs in your Smileycons program by selecting them from the dropdown menu near the top of the main program . Or you can click the blue arrow ^ on the right side of the program and choose the pack you want to use.

Question #5:  I tried to use in Outlook, but the smileys are not animated.

If you are using MS Word as the editor for Outlook, the images will not be animated. This is how MS Word works with images. If you want your images animated in Outlook, be sure that MS Word is not the editor for Outlook Email.  Animations, including Smileycons Animations may not work in Outlook 2007 because Outlook 2007 restricts its users to Word as Editor. This may change in the future, but as of the date this was written,  there was no option in Outlook 2007 to disable MS Word as editor for HTML email.

Question #6:  What email programs does Smileycons 6.0 work with.

Smileycons works with most popular email programs, including Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Netscape, Mozilla Mail, AOL mail, Eudora and other HTML compatible email programs, Remember to setup Smileycons for the email program you use.

Smileycons also works in Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and other Web email that allow html mode. Be sure you set up Smileycons correctly if you're using Web mail.

--  Back to Top of Page  --

Question #7:  I have two other smiley programs, so can I still use Smileycons?

Yes, absolutely! Smileycons contains many original smileys and emoticons not found anywhere else on the web, and Smileycons gives you the ability to add html/text messages and signatures too!  The classic pack includes most smileys you find on other smiley programs.  So, while you may use as many other smiley programs as you wish, you may find that Smileycons gives you all the choices you would need in one program plus more features. Don't forget, you can add your own smileys, signatures, text messages, html and more to Smileycons too!

Be careful though - most "free" Smileycons take a huge toll on your privacy and your computer. Almost all of them are spyware, adware or browser/search engine hijackers. If you're not sure, run a good anti-spyware program to see if another free smiley program is spyware/adware. We recommend Spyware Doctor. You can scan your computer for adware/spyware free by visiting this page.

Question #8:  When I send two of the same smileys in Outlook Express, only one shows, and the other is a red x.

This is an issue with an older version Outlook Express; updates which you should have installed with latest Microsoft update corrects this issue. This issue was corrected in Outlook Express 6 and is not an issue with Windows Mail.

--  Back to Top of Page  --

Question #9: People are telling me that they do not see smileys; all they see is a red x.

Outlook Express: Some adware and spyware smiley type programs, and email programs, can and do change your settings so that you cannot send images with email. To correct this issue open Smileycons, click Options, and choose Configure Email Program. If this important setting was changed, it will be corrected in Outlook Express.

AOL: Be sure your AOL and/or AOL users you send to have set up their AOL to view images with email. This is a setting AOL lets its users control.

Hotmail: Be sure your Hotmail and/or Hotmail users you send to have enabled "Display Images Automatically" See Question #2 above.

Finally, if you have added your own images, you must use the advanced setting and also upload to your web server/web space when sending to Hotmail, Yahoo or other web based mails so they can see the images. If you have not set up new packs this way, be sure you only send the ones that are already included in the program to these users. You can send images you added to anyone using html enabled mail programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express, etc. without having to upload images to your server.

Question #9: Can I use Smileycons with MSN Messenger (or other messenger programs such as ICQ, etc)?

It does not work with many instant messenger service because they don't allow 3rd party programs to interface with them for "security" reasons. It will work with MSN 7.5 version and Windows Live Messenger 8.0. Smileycons will not work with older versions of MSN. Older versions of Smileycons will not work with MSN or Windows Live Messenger.

If you're using Windows 98 or Windows ME you cannot use Smileycons in MSN or Windows Live Messenger because you cannot use newer versions of Smileycons.

--  Back to Top of Page  --

Question #10: Do I have to be online to use Smileycons? I write all my mail offline as my connection is very remote.

You don't need to be online. Smileycons comes set in local mode so you can use it in your current email program. You may leave local mode checked when using your email program (the one installed on your computer and the images will come from your hard drive not the Web. It is important that you configure Smileycons for use with your favorite email program (like Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) before using it for the the first time. For simple instructions on how to set up your Smileycons for the way you are going to be using it most of the time see our Help Page/Program Options.

You need to be online to use your Smileycons on Web mail (Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, Gmail) and on Forums and Message Board. Make sure you take a moment to configure your Smileycons for the Web Mail program you're using or set Smileycons to the correct Forum or Message Board type. If you set up Smileycons for your particular Web mail program or Forum/Message board you will not need to uncheck Local Mode. The only time you need to uncheck Local Mode (under Options) is if you wanted to use the smileys in other Web Mail applications and/or forum types not specifically identified in the Smileycons Configuration Tool (see our Help Page/Program Options). You must uncheck local mode whenever you are using Smileycons Universal Mode on Web Mail interfaces which are not listed in the Smileycons Configuration Tool.

Question #11: I am having problems with my download (corrupt file, no download window, etc)

We have made a page with an explanation of most commonly encountered problems. Click here to review this page. Click "Close window" when you are done so that you will return to this page.

Question #12:  When I close the program to add new packs (or other reasons) I close it, but it says I still need to "close" it!  Why is it still running if I closed it?

You can add new packs to Smileycons 6.0 without closing the program. Older versions require you to close the program to install new packs. Also you must be using a registered version of Smileycons in order to install new packs. You cannot install packs using the free version of Smileycons.

If you are using an older version of Smileycons and you're using Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista, please makes sure you're using the latest version of Smileycons.

If you're using Windows 98/ME - you'll need to close the program to install new packs. Remember - this is true for all versions - you'll always need to close your Smileycons program when upgrading. It's important when you upgrade that you do not uninstall your current version, just install the new version over the old version. You are given a choice if you want to "minimize" on close, or Exit on Close, along with several other options. Please click Options, Preferences. Here you will see all your choices. If you have a check next to "minimize on close" it means you are minimizing the program to your system tray or your task bar when you chose; you are not "exiting" the program. This makes it convenient to get to the program easily when you want to use it!

If you need to exit the program, simply choose File, Exit. Or, you can change your settings to suit your use and your needs.  If you would like to see a picture tutorial showing you how to close Smileycons, click here!

Question #13: Sometimes the new images I add are gone the next time I turn my computer on.. what is causing this?

If you let Windows close a program, it does not save the latest changes/updates. It is very important to choose File, Exit (not close) in the Smileycons program after you make changes such as additional packs, images, etc.     Do NOT click the red x to close.. you must choose File, Exit, as the red x simply minimizes.

Question #14: Do I get free program updates if I buy Smileycons?

If your using the free version you may update it whenever we release a new version - it will have the same restrictions as your current free version. Free version is being offered for a limited time only.

All registered users may get free version updates (i.e., update from 6.0 to 6.1). Question #14:  Does Smileycons use a toolbar in my email or browser?

Smileycons is not a toolbar for your email or browser; it is a stand-alone program. It works with your email program and your web browser too, so you can even use in message boards, forums and web based email such as Hotmail and Yahoo. Most toolbars interfere with the operation of your email program or browser, and tend to be spyware. Smileycons does not interfere or make changes to your email program or browser!

Question #15: I purchased Smileycons on CDROM and when I updated it says my 7 day trial has expired, and asks me to purchase or register. How do I register from my CDROM?

We include copies of the key on your CDROM in case you update and need it. To find your key, do this:

1.  Put the CD in your drive, when it opens, click close
2.  Click My Computer
3.  Click D Drive (or your CDROM drive)
4.  You will see a folder called "contents", click this folder
5.  Now you will see a folder called Registration Key, click it.

There are two versions of the key.. one is clickable called "Registration Key", so if you click it the program will automatically register for you. Or you can choose the one called key.txt, and copy the information on that file into the program.

If you would like to print these instructions, click here

Question #16:  I ordered the Registered Version but your download leads me to the free version. How do I get the Registered Version that I paid for?

If you purchase Smileycons you will be issued a key. This key is used to change your Free or Trial  Version to the registered version. All downloaded versions are free or trial versions. When you order, please be patient. All registration keys are mailed within 24 hours. If you haven't received it within 24 hours there's a good chance your ISP has faulty spam filters identifying your registration email as "spam". Make sure you have *@smileycons.com on your whitelist and make sure your ISP is not blocking email from our smileycons.com domain.

Question #17: Does Smileycons work with Yahoo PhotoMail?

No. Because Yahoo PhotoMail is a restricted proprietary mail system that only allows images in your PhotoMail archive to be inserted you cannot use Smileycons with Yahoo PhotoMail. Smileycons works great with the free version of Yahoo as well as other Web-based email like Gmail, Hotmail, etc. If you've purchased PhotoMail, you'll have to be sure not to enable it when using Smileycons - or get a different Free Yahoo Account to use with Smileycons and other images.

--  Back to Top of Page  --

Question #18: What is the difference between the FREE version of Smileycons and the Registered Version?

Free version has some restrictions (you cannot use signatures, for example) It comes with a good selection of images, emoticons, and samples from some of our other packs. You cannot create new packs with the free or trial version, you cannot create and save signature files, and you cannot install additional expansion packs. To unlock all the features of the program you should purchase a registration key from our orders page.

Question #19: Does Smileycons work with Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Beginning with Smileycons Version 6.0 - Smileycons is 100% compatible with Windows Vista and with Windows 7. Smileycons 6.0 is also 100% compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Smileycons 6.0 is not compatible with Windows 98 or Windows ME. Those using Windows 98/ME will have to use Smileycons 5.0 or lower. There are no free versions of Smileycons 5.0, we do offer a 7 day trial for Windows 98/ME users.

--  Back to Top of Page  --

Question #20: I am using Windows 98 and Smileycons keeps crashing. What's up with that?

Windows 98 and Windows ME, unfortunately, are old operating systems that aren't even being supported by Microsoft any longer. That being said we've committed to offering those still using Windows 98 and Windows ME a functional version of Smileycons. However, Windows 98/ME users cannot use any new versions of Smileycons. Smileycons 6.0 does not work on work on Windows 98 or Windows ME. It works on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. If you are using Windows 98 or Windows ME you can still use our Smileycons 5.0 version. See our downloads page for current download links and instructions. Please note: We don't offer a free version of Smileycons for Windows 98 or Windows ME. Version 5.0 for Windows 98/ME is a 7-day trial version. You can still purchase registration keys for this version to upgrade to a registered version. All expansion packs we currently offer will work with Smileycons 5.0.

Question #21: I copy and paste my registration key but it says it's not valid

When you receive your registration key it will look similar to the sample below - we've highlighted the key code in green text. It's important when you copy the key code that you only copy the key code itself and not the lines above and below it. The easiest way to do do this is to place your cursor in the center of the block of text and symbols, and triple-click (3 rapid left-clicks of your mouse). This highlights only the necessary code without copying anything else.

All keys we issue are valid. So if your key does not work the first time, check to make sure you're copying it correctly, then paste it in the registration field of Smileycons. Under no circumstances should you ever try to type the key into the program. It won't work and it will waste a lot of your time. If you have trouble copying and pasting, please contact us and we will try to help you.

Question #22Does Smileycons work with Outlook 2007?

Currently, Outlook 2007 has eliminated the option for users to select anything but MS Word as editor for Outlook 2007 HTML email. Since animations don't work in MS Word, you can use the Smileycons' images in Outlook 2007 but until Microsoft gives users back the option to de-select using MS Word as editor, animations will not work and Smileycons will be restricted to being static images. This not only applies to Smileycons but to all animated gifs as well. We hope that Microsoft will listen to users this time and actually give them what they want instead of what MS wants them to have. Smileycons continues to work well in all previous versions of MS Outlook, when users de-select the option to use MS Word as editor for Outlook.

Question #23: How do I uninstall Smileycons?

The first thing you need to do is make sure Smileycons is not running. Open Smileycons and click "FILE" then "EXIT" on its toolbar. This exits the Smileycons program. You cannot uninstall Smileycons if it is running, so be sure to close (Exit) the program first.

Windows Vista

Click Start--->Control Panel --->Programs (uninstall a program). Find Smileycons in the alphabetical list and highlight it by clicking it. Then click "Remove". A prompt will ask if you're sure you want to uninstall Smileycons. Choose "Yes".

You can also install Smileycons by clicking on your Start button, "All Programs" and locating Smileycons in the list. Open the folder and click "Uninstall Smileycons". This works on all versions of Windows from Windows 95 through Windows Vista.

Question #25: I just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I downloaded the new version of Smileycons for Vista but it does not work. Only an outline and Xs appear where a Smiley should.

Programs like McAfee, Norton, and Zone Alarm may prevent you from sending and receiving images in email. If you're using one of these programs you'll need to read the software's documentation to learn how to control it. We cannot provide support for (nor do we recommend) these programs. If you're using one of these programs you first need to make sure they are not blocking your email images or preventing you from using email normally. See the program's help files for assistance on learning how to configure these programs.

Secondly, in its default settings, Windows Mail has images blocked and external HTML content blocked. Additionally it is set to "Restricted Zone". These restrictive settings will not allow you to see or send inline images, stationery, video clips or any sort of multi-media content. But, Windows Mail (which is the new name for Outlook Express on Windows Vista) has all the features of Outlook Express, all you have to is make a couple of easy changes. It's important that you understand that the problem is not with Smileycons, but with the way Windows Mail is setup by default. Please see this short tutorial on how to configure Windows Mail so it works the way Outlook Express did. After you make these changes you'll be able to use Smileycons, send and see pictures in email, send and see stationery, send and see video clips - in short, you'll be able to use all the multi-media features that you were used to with Outlook Express in Windows Mail on Windows Vista. Click here to view our Windows Mail Setup Tutorial.

Questions 25 and 26. (Question 25) Your program freezes or slows my computer. I am using SmileyCentral and Windows Vista. (Question 26) Your program freezes and slows my computer. I am using Windows Vista and Incredimail.

Neither SmileyCentral or Incredimail are currently compatible with Windows Vista (as of April 23, 2007). While both say they are working on a compatible version but as of right now neither Incredimail or SmileyCentral works correctly on Windows Vista

Windows Vista is a much more secure operating system than Windows XP. Trying or installing incompatible software like SmileyCentral and/or Incredimail on a Windows Vista computer can cause problems with your computer and problems with programs, like Smileycons, which is compatible with Windows Vista. If you install or use Incredimail or SmileyCentral on Windows Vista computer you can expect stability and performance issues.

Company statements regarding compatibility issues with Windows Vista :

SmileyCentral - See this page

Incredimail - See this page

Additionally, keep in mind that SmileyCentral/FunWebProducts is detected and removed by many top-of-the-line anti-spyware programs including SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, AVG Anti-Spyware, McAfee, Norton, Spybot Search and Destroy and many others. I

Question #28  I cannot drag an image from the web into my program!

First off, make sure you have made a category AND a group so you have a place to drag and drop. Keep in mind you cannot drag and drop hyperlinked images into the program; you can identify a hyperlinked image by hovering over it. If you see the image leads to another page or image, you cannot use it in the program.

If you have lost some or all of your packs please reinstall using the registration email we sent you. If you purchased additional packs you may re-download them by following the instructions you were emailed when you purchased the packs. All free expansion packs my be downloaded from our Free Packs Gallery page at http://smileycons.com/gallery.html  . The only way to replace missing packs is by re-installing. The images may still show up in Windows Explorer or My Computer but they will not be usable unless the corresponding XML data file for that pack is intact. If you cannot locate your original email please submit a support request by going to http://smileycons.com/support.html and we will verify and resend your information to you.
